SOS Children’s Villages Calbayog, in partnership with the Rotary
Club of Calbayog, distributed 12 fishing boats and 24 baking kits to deserving
participants enrolled in SOS’ Family Strengthening Program.
Aside from providing loving homes to abandoned and neglected
children, SOS Children’s Villages aims to prevent vulnerable families from
breaking down due to poverty. SOS’ Family Strengthening Program was established
with the intent of reducing cases of child abandonment and neglect through
providing assistance in accessing government support, conducting livelihood
programs, and distributing relief packs to disadvantaged families.
A series of workshops about financial literacy,
entrepreneurship, and technical skills were conducted before the distribution
of livelihood supplies. This is to ensure that the supplies will be utilized
wisely and efficiently. Twenty-four beneficiaries were able to successfully
complete the Basic Bread Making Course and were awarded baking kits. Each kit
consists of yeast, sugar, flour, eggs, milk, butter, and baking pans.
Meanwhile, 12 local fishermen living in the coastal areas of Calbayog who were also beneficiaries of the Family Strengthening Program received basic fishing kits. A single basic fishing kit consists of fish hooks, nylons, headlights, cap, long-sleeves shirt, lunchbox, tumbler, and a fishing boat. These were distributed on August 28, 2020, in Barangay Mangiinoo.
“We don’t want to
provide support that will only produce half-baked results. To empower families,
we must equip them with tools that can help them sustain their daily needs.
Through this initiative, we hope that more children will remain well-fed inside
their own homes”, said SOS Children’s Village Calbayog Village Director Emily
Torculas.
SOS Children’s Village Calbayog and the Rotary Club of
Calbayog’s shared passion for serving the community has been the inspiration
behind this project. Thanks to the support of the members and partners of the
Rotary Club of Calbayog, the tools and workshops were provided to families in
need.
